Green Board Drywall

Drywall contractors often refer to water-proof drywall as “green board” because it is green. However, it is an important material because of its water and moisture-resistant qualities. For these reasons, green board is often used in rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other rooms where moisture is frequently in the air. Although traditional drywall that is constructed with a gypsum-based core works well for all other areas of a home, places like bathrooms and kitchens require a specialized material that will combat the excess moisture production and retention.

Water-Proof vs. Water-Resistant

One of the biggest misconceptions regarding green board is that it is water-proof. The truth is that green board is water-resistant, not water-proof. Although it cannot completely stop water penetration, it is still highly resilient against linger air moisture and leakages. This type of drywall is meant for rooms that experience higher levels of humidity and moisture, however, they are not meant to be installed directly behind shower tile, underneath bathtubs, around kitchen sinks, or any other area that has direct contact with water. These areas require a different type of specialized drywall, one of the most popular being fiber cement board.

Installation Tips and Guidelines

When installing green board, it is important that you have the proper experience, knowledge, and resources to do so according to industry best practices and code standards. If you do not meet these credentials, it is vital that you leave green board installation to a licensed Indianapolis drywall contractor you can trust.

If you have installed drywall before, then you should brush up on the fundamental steps involved in the process. Installing green board is very similar to installing regular drywall. Start by examining and measuring the area you are working with. Then be sure to score your green board accordingly.

After you have scored your drywall, bend it at the markings and use a utility knife to make a clean cut on the top layer of paper. Next, attach the drywall to your framing, and connect it using drywall screws or nails in the areas where the framing aligns with the green board.

Using one continuous piece of drywall tape, cover the seams between the sections of drywall. Extend the tape from top to bottom, all across the walls and in the wall corners. Now it is time to apply your drywall mud to the taped-off areas. Be sure to fill in the indents caused by your screws, too. Once the mud dries, you are ready to prime and paint!

What You Need to Know About Spackle and Spackle Tools

When it is time to drywall your property, there are endless steps, instructions, guidelines, and materials that must be implemented with perfection to achieve a level-5 drywall install. One of the most important materials that will make a big difference in your end result is your spackle. Continue reading to learn more about spackle, and some important tips that go along with its preparation and application.

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Spackle is a paste-like made from fine aggregates of limestone, dolomite, water, mica, perlite, polymers and pyroohvllite. It is also referred to as “drywall mud” or “joint compound”, and come in two basic categories. These categories are known as “Quick-setting” drywall mud and “pre-mixed drywall mud.” The type of drywall spackle you use will depend on the type of job you have to do.

Quick-Setting Drywall Mud

Quick-setting drywall mud is not the traditional go-to spackle for moderate to large-scale drywall install jobs. Instead, it is perfect for small patch jobs that require a quick turn-around time since it does not required you to wait a full 24 hours before applying a second or third coat. When you have small holes or cracks that need repaired, a quick-setting product is a great choice. However, it is not usually used as a finishing coat because it is more difficult to sand compared to a lighter-weight, all-purpose spackle product. In fact, when using hot mud to patch up a drywall hole, it is encouraged to finish the surface with a light-weight, all-purpose mud.

A popular tip from the pros is to always use hot drywall mud if you are also using mesh tape because mesh tape does not provide a bond that is strong enough. Another important tip is to make sure the hot mud is fully dry before applying additional coats. Just because you use a 45-minute hot mud product does not mean it is done drying in 45 minutes. It could take several more hours. Drywall spackle is dry when it turns completely white.

Traditional Drywall Mud

Pre-mixed mud is considered to be the traditional spackle for drywall projects. It comes ready to use as a mud; all you have to do is add a little water to get the proper consistency. For instance, bedding tape will required a thinner consistency. Similarly, you will need a thin consistency of mud when using automatic taping tools so that it allows smooth flow through the drywall mud pump and tools. But you must be careful, because if the mud gets too thin, it will not spread properly and it will shrink back too much, leading to cracking, warping, and similar surface blemishes. It is basically a long learning curve when it comes to knowing the proper mud consistencies to use. It simply takes experience, and trial and error.

Although there are several types of joint compounds on the shelf to choose from, there are three common types that drywall professionals tend to use. These include all-purpose, light-weight all-purpose, and topping. All-purpose joint compounds tend to have more adhesive agents in them, making them suitable for most drywall applications, especially when bedding seams. Light-weight all-purpose drywall muds are recommended for the first and second coat of seams and corner beads. They contain less adhesive agents, so it is not always a great choice for taping seams. Topping drywall mud is not used as often as the former types of spackle, but it comes in handy for texture applications, as well as, top coats for seams and corner beads. It is too light weight to use for taping joints.

Drywall Spackle Tools

When it comes to using spackle for basic drywall projects, all you need is a mud tray, an inside corner tool, and an assortment of spackle knives ranging from 4 to 12-inch blade widths. If you are working with curved archways, you may also need an outside corner tool. Just be sure to keep your tools clean after every use. Use a small scrub brush and clean water to gently remove mud residues and dust.

How to Cut Drywall With Just Two Simple Tools

When it comes to cutting drywall, professional contractors use a secret method to save time. This method involves using two very basic and common toolbox staples: a tape measurer and a utility knife. Continue reading to learn how you can cut drywall like a pro using only these two tools!

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Before you rush to the work shed for your toolbox and drywall supplies, it is important to understand that this method of cutting drywall requires a learning curve of practice. After a lot of practice and patience, you too can cut drywall with a utility knife and tape measurer, just like the pros do!

Here’s How to Get Started!

Many people naturally want to place the tape measurer hook at the edge of the drywall sheet for stability, but this is actually wrong. Instead, the tape measurer hook should be placed along the drywall board where you will be making the actual cut.

From there, you must place the tip of the utility blade against the tape measurer hook and then hold it in place by pinching it with your thumb. Steadily move your free hand to the end of the drywall board and pinch your thumb and forefinger together on the tape measurer at the right increment.

Here’s where practice will pay off for you. In one swift movement, simultaneously move your knife and hands down the drywall using a consistent downward pressure. Once you have completed the cut, simply snap off the scrap piece and cut the paper liner on the other side to separate it entirely.

Practice Makes Perfect

Be sure to practice this method of drywall cutting before making it a staple move in your work. Furthermore, be sure you are wearing all the proper protective gear to reduce the risk of serious injuries. If you are not adept in drywall work, or have little to no experience working with drywall materials, it is not recommended to start with this method of cutting. Learn the basics first, practice for a long time, and then commit to improving your skills as you ride the learning curve. This is the best method of becoming a skilled handyman in any trade.

Tips for Mildew and Mold Protection After Heavy Rains

We have all grown up with the annual phrase, “April Showers Brings May Flowers.” And it is so true! But sometimes, the rainy season doesn’t stop in April, and instead, continues throughout the entire year. Rain is certainly good for the environment, however, there is a downside to all the moisture caused by this much precipitation, which is the potential for mold and mildew growth. In the wintertime, the likelihood of mold growth is higher since snow and ice add to the total amount of precipitation. For home and property owners, basements, crawl spaces, attics, air ducts, and even HVAC systems are primary targets because they harness the perfect dark and wet environment that mold thrives on.

Tips for Avoiding DIY Drywall Mistakes

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

When people attempt to do their own drywall repairs, the potential for making mistakes is high. Without the proper resources and knowledge, drywall repairs can be messy, complex, and unpredictable. They are not the everyday chore you can easily tackle. However, for small jobs, do-it-yourself repairs are possible. If you are preparing to fix a small hole or area of damaged drywall, it is important to review some common mistakes so that you do not repeat them.

Continue reading to learn the most common DIY drywall errors, and how to avoid making them yourself.

Be Sure You Have Proper Edge Support

Many people make the mistake of not checking the framing at the inside corners before starting their drywall repair or installation project. You must have adequate framing and support, or the drywall you hang will be too heavy. For most jobs, you need at least one inch of exposed framing. If you do not have this extra framing, you’ll need to attach an additional 2×4 to provide alongside the framing you do have. You may also have to add blocking, so be sure to check the top of the wall that runs parallel to the ceiling.

Mark Your Framing

Do not forget to mark your framing members. If you forget, and go on to cover your framing with drywall, you will have a lot of trouble finding the proper places to screw. You need to mark the ceiling joists, and then the center of each stud in the floor, as well as the ceiling.

Avoid Tapering Drywall Corners

A tapered edge of a sheet of drywall will not do you any good once it comes time to install the corner bead. This will cause the corner bead to hang too low, which will make it a challenge covering the joint compound. If you have cut edges, place them on the outside corners of the framing.

Trim Openings Before Fastening Drywall

It is common to measure incorrectly or come across an outlet that doesn’t fit. This is why it is important to always check the fit before you fasten anything to the framing.

Use the Longest Drywall Sheets Possible

You want to avoid adding extra joints, especially butt joints. Taping around these joints is time-consuming and complicated, so reduce the quantity by procuring the longest and biggest drywall sheets possible for your project. For the average 8 to 9 foot wall, it is recommended to get specially-cut 54 inch wide drywall sheets. If you have a larger job, you should use 12 foot sheets, but it is recommended to get the materials delivered. They are heavy, and difficult to transport.

The 8 Basic Phases of a Basement Refinishing Project

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Are you considering refinishing your basement on your own? If so, this is a big decision that will involve comprehensive research, trial and error, long hours, and slow progress. Unless you are an experienced handyman, or have experience in the building and construction industry, it is not recommended to refinish a basement without professional assistance. Not only are there several steps involved, there are even more safety and building codes you must adhere to at all times. Furthermore, refinishing a basement is already a huge investment, so adding on the cost of all the needed tools and equipment is just another hit to the budget. Basically, if you want your basement refinished the right way, you need to hire a professional team of drywall contractors who can manage the project effectively and efficiently.

On the other hand, if you are experienced and ready to take on the job, start by reviewing the basic phases of your upcoming remodel in order to prepare yourself on what to expect. Continue reading to review these phases, and who to call for trusted basement refinishing in your town.

8 Basement Refinishing Phases:

Phase 1 – Framing

You will need to frame your walls. Generally, this will involve the majority of planning, as well as, lumber, power tools (framing gun, masonry gun, air compressor, a chop saw, etc.), permits, inspections, wall blocking, ductwork framing, window framing, fire blocking, register extensions, basement poles, existing wall insulation, and much more.

Phase 2 – Electrical

Although you can save hundreds of dollars doing your own electrical, it is never recommended. Money saved is not worth putting your home and your family’s safety at risk. With the innovative changes to the industry, the requirements of professional electricians are much stricter and more complex. Also, there are various codes, new and old, that must always be met. Electricians must know so much more than they did 20 years ago, and this knowledge is critical to electrical safety.

Phase 3 – Plumbing

Just like electrical, it is strongly recommended to hire a professional plumber to ensure your basement plumbing is up to code. You don’t want a septic blowout on your hands! However, with experience and the right knowledge, it is possible to do your own plumbing. Decide wisely.

Phase 4 – Audio Visual

This phase is optional, but most people want television and sound in their finished basement. You can prewire your basement to be a hot spot for all your audio visual and internet needs.

Phase 5 – Drywall

Drywall is heavy, awkward, and challenging to work with. It is dusty, messy, and easily damaged if not handled properly. It also takes a lot of trial and error to learn how to finish drywall properly. You can so this phase yourself, but it will take some time to learn if you do not have experience. Fortunately, you can always hire professional drywall contractors to do the job for you! They can get an entire basement framed and finished in as little as a few days.

Phase 6 – Painting

This is a phase you can certainly do yourself, even without much experience. Just be sure you purchase quality materials and discuss your objectives with the knowledgeable sales people at the paint store. They can get you set up with everything you need.

Phase 7 – Trim & Doors

Trim and doors are an important part of refinishing a basement because it adds the final touches that makes the room feel like the rest of the home. Subtle but impactful, trim and doors are something you want to put some time and effort into for a great result.

Phase 8 – Flooring

Whether you choose tile, carpet, or some other type of flooring, it will be the last step of your basement refinishing project. You can do this step yourself, but it helps to have a partner. However, if you are installing carpet, you may want to use professional installation.

A Closer Look at Skip Trowel Drywall Texture

Skip trowel is a confusing term since it can refer to several different types of drywall texture. It is used too vaguely in the drywall industry, which is misleading among property owners. Proper skip trowel texture can only be achieved using the right tools and techniques. For it to be a true skip trowel, the drywall mud material must be applied in a very thin layer using a specialized curved knife, called a trowel. These are 18 inches wide, which aids in the application process. When applied at the right angle, the blade of the knife spreads the mud in a way that causes it to “skip” across the surface. This creates a unique rounded circle texture that is a true and true skip trowel.

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

Similar Drywall Textures

Skip trowel is often confused for alternative drywall textures. One of the most common textures mistaken for skip trowel is called hawk and trowel. This drywall texture is a lot different because it produces many layers of texture, rather than just one thin layer. Also, hawk and trowel texture creates several lines and uneven circles, unlike skip trowel that produces small round circles. Another common drywall texture that is frequently confused for skip towel is called Sante Fe texture. Santa Fe drywall texture also uses a very thin layer of material.

Skip Trowel Application

If you are planning to finish your drywall on your own, you will need to purchase the materials for the project. You can find everything you need for drywall work at any local home improvement store. It is important to have the proper tools, materials, and equipment to finish drywall. Not only is it a challenging task to undertake without experience or knowledge, it is a costly investment. A better option would be to hire professional drywall contractors. They have the training, equipment, and resources to deliver prompt and professional drywall finishing at an affordable price.

How Much Does it Cost to Drywall a House?

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

Construction and remodeling estimations can be quite tricky without the right knowledge. In fact, simply setting a budget can be challenging if you don’t know what to expect in terms of price. So the cost to drywall an entire house is even more difficult to estimate on your own. Several factors influence the overall price of a drywall project, including state labor laws, labor rates, square footage rates, material costs, taxes, and more.

This means you will need the assistance of a professional general contractor to provide an accurate estimate for your drywall installation needs. To better understand a contractor’s estimate, it is helpful to learn how all the above-mentioned factors play a role in determining the total cost to drywall an entire home. Continue reading to do just that!

Estimating Drywall Work

It is important to remember that every contractor and every job is different, so costs cannot be exactly estimated in a general sense. The information below is just a basic guide to how drywall projects are priced, and what goes into the total cost of the job.

Whole-House Drywall Jobs

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Installation 317-269-7319

When drywall is being installed in more than a couple rooms in your home, you can expect it to be priced as a large drywall job. Usually, large drywall jobs are those that require more than 50 sheets of gypsum board. Most often, contractors determine the amount of sheets needed by totaling the square footage of the room. The total square footage of a room includes ceilings, windows, and doors. You do not subtract the square footage of the windows and doors. The same amount of sheets will be needed, and they’ll be cut out to accuracy, on-site.

Here is an example of estimate a single room’s square footage:

15′ x 15′ Room with 8′ Ceilings =

Wall A: 15’x11’= 165ft2
Wall B: 15’x8’= 120ft2
Wall C: 15’x8’= 120ft2
Wall D: 15’x11’= 165ft2
Ceiling: 15’x15’= 225ft2

Total Square Footage = 795ft2

Using Basic Math

Once you have determined the square footage of each room, you can multiply this number by the contractor’s square footage rates. Contractor labor rates, which are usually calculated by square footage but depends on the contractor’s preference. A common contractor rate is between 40 to 80 cents per square foot, but varies among companies. This is just for taping and hanging drywall, so expect to pay extra for materials, which are also calculated by square footage. These commonly range between 30 and 40 cents per square foot, but again, vary among contractors.

The 3 Most Common Types of Pre-Mixed Drywall Mud

As an extension of last month’s blog regarding the common types of drywall spackle, we would like to continue our conversation with a detailed look at one of the spackles we mentioned: premixed drywall mud. Here’s a little reminder:

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Pre-Mixed Drywall Mud:

Pre-mixed drywall mud is sold by the 4.5 gallon bucket, and comes pre-mixed and ready to use right out of the bag. All you need to do is add a little water to soften the mud. Then just thin to the consistency required for your particular drywall project. Thinner mud is best for projects that involve automatic taping tools or bedding and tape. Projects such as spackling walls will call for thicker mud.

The three most commonly used types of premixed drywall mud include 1) all-purpose joint compound, 2) lightweight all-purpose, and 3) topping compound. These compounds and more can be used in combination with one another. It all depends on the type of drywall project. Now let’s take a closer look at each one.

All-Purpose Joint Compound

The reason why this joint compound is referred to as “all-purpose” is because it can be used for any type of application. It has great adhesive agents, making it perfect for projects that require bedding in paper tape on drywall seams. It is also great to first coat seams and corners beads. However, it is not commonly used as a finish coat because it’s more difficult to stand than other related products, namely lightweight all-purpose compound.

Lightweight All-Purpose Compound

Although this drywall mud is light in weight, it can also be used for any application. Because lightweight all-purpose compound retains fewer adhesive agents in comparison to all-purpose joint compound, many professional drywall contractors believe it is not a good choice for taping drywall seams. Most prefer a more durable compound, such as all-purpose joint compound. Instead, professionals generally use lightweight all-purpose mud for the first and second coats of seams and corners beads. And it is almost always used as a finish coat because it’s so easy to sand.

Topping Compound

Topping drywall compound is used much less than the other two premixed drywall muds mentioned above. Most often, it is used as a topcoat for drywall seams and corner bead or for texture applications. But it is not recommended for taping joints.

Important Safety Tips for Drywall Work

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Indianapolis Drywall Contractors 317-269-7319

Whether doing it on your own or hiring a professional crew, working with drywall is a serious project that requires an acute attention to detail, and of course, an appreciation for safety. Often times, anyone outsourcing or performing drywall work is on a strict time schedule, which means many people are tempted to rush through the process. If this happens, important safety precautions and practices can be easily overlooked or forgotten.

The chief point here is to remember that proper drywall safety can only be achieved if you to take your time. Cutting corners and taking shortcuts will not improve the outcome of your project, nor will it protect you from accidents. Continue reading to review some important drywall safety tips and reminders to better protect yourself and your team on your next job.

Drywall Safety Tips

Drywall work includes a long list of duties that can lead to serious injuries and accidents if one is not careful. Cutting, lifting, hanging, screwing, taping, and using power tools are just a few parts of the drywall process that can be dangerous if not performed with the utmost care and caution. Follow the safety tips below to avoid harming yourself, others, and your property.

Stay Attentive to Heavy Weight. Remember that drywall sheets are heavy. A standard sheet of ½ inch drywall weighs an average of 1.7 pounds per square foot. So a 4×8 sheet can be as heavy as 54 pounds. You must be careful transporting, lifting, and storing heavy drywall sheets. If one were to topple over on a pet or child, it can cause serious injuries.

Watch Out for Large Buckets. Large 5-gallon buckets of compound are an overlooked, life-threatening hazard for pets and children when left unsupervised. There have been cases of drowning and suffocation in wet drywall compound, as well as, old compound buckets filled with water.

Control and Manage Dust. The dust that is produced from sanding drywall can be hazardous in many ways. It can cause minor to severe head and respiratory complications, such as coughing, sore throat, dry nose, red itchy eyes, skin irritations, and more. But drywall dust can also induce and worsen existing upper respiratory issues like allergies and asthma.

Additional Tips:

🛠 Use proper tools for comfort, efficiency, and effectiveness.

🛠 Clear your work area before you begin.

🛠 Wear proper back braces and lifting gear to move drywall sheets.

🛠 Use drywall carts, specialized handles, and dollies to move heavy drywall.

🛠 Have a partner present to help lift and handle drywall sheets. Never lift alone.

🛠 Place sheets as close as possible to their final destination to reduce repeat lifting.

🛠 Avoid over-the-head drywall lifting and holding.

🛠 Take short breaks throughout the day to avoid over-exertion or muscle injury.

🛠 Wear dust masks, respirators, and safety goggles when sanding drywall.

🛠 Wear protective footwear, pants, and long-sleeved shirts.

🛠 Use damp sponges, shop vacuums, and microfiber cloths to remove dust.

🛠 Wait for dust to settle completely, and always work from the top down.
